What is Henna?

The powdered leaves of the henna plant have been used for body decoration for thousands of years. A native plant created an artistic culture shared by generations of women throughout Asia, Middle-Eastern and North African countries. Traditionally henna is applied at women's gatherings. Observance of holidays, personal celebrations of birth, marriage and rites of passage are all occasions for beautiful henna body art. It is believed that henna decoration will ward off evil and bring good luck.

Reaching the U.S. in the 1990's, henna is becoming widely accepted as a form of temporary personal adornment without the permanence, pain or expense of an inked tattoo.

Applied in the form of a paste, our henna is hand-mixed by the artist and owner of Cape Cod Henna, Jo Ann Whittemore. Simple, safe ingredients are henna powder, pure essential oils and lemon juice. The paste dries in 10-15 minutes, the stain takes 3 days to reach it's peak color and will last for 10-14 days. Aftercare instructions are important!

Should you need henna for a special event, try to book 3 days prior for the deepest, richest color.

Henna goes everywhere and loves parties. Birthdays, Sweet Sixteens are perfect! Girls Night Out, bridal and baby showers, corporate events, prom, craft and music festivals.

Based in the Mid-Cape area, our studio is located at 377 Great Western Rd. Harwich.
